Sustainable Tourism

The best hospitality stems from sustainability

We firmly believe that the best hospitality is based on a heartfelt concern for this land, Taiwan. With every detail, from selecting local ingredients to offering vegetarian/vegan-friendly dining options, supporting local arts and culture, promoting community inclusion, and implementing energy-saving and plastic use and carbon emission reduction initiatives, we show our commitment to sustainability. From the moment you check in, enjoy a wonderful stay and the warmest expression of love for the earth.

The Howard Prince Hotel Taichung’s excellence in sustainable management and operations was recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) in October 2025. It is now one of only a few starred hotels in Taiwan to have received GSTC hotel sustainability certification.
This certification is based on GSTC Criteria, which can be divided into four pillars, and confirms that this hotel’s operations are in line with international standards in four areas: sustainable management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural impacts, and environmental impacts. Moreover, this hotel has established a solid foundation for continuous upgrading and optimization.

Sustainability Governance

People-oriented: creating a sustainable workplace

We believe that people are key to sustainability governance. Upholding a spirit of mutual respect, we value and encourage the growth of every employee and strive to create a friendly, inclusive, gender-neutral, safe, and worry-free work environment in which people from different backgrounds can fully develop their talents.

Our employees are encouraged to pursue self-improvement through professional training, internal training for employees and managers, and language classes. We support our employees in their efforts to improve and develop professionally, fulfilling our commitment to service excellence.

We also actively invest resources in physical and mental health care for our employees. By offering fitness classes and organizing clubs and wellness activities, we help our employees to achieve a work-life balance, fostering a vibrant and warm workplace.

In addition to cultivating talent, we are committed to the development of a workplace culture based on common good and shared prosperity. Through a comprehensive promotion system, benefits, and reward mechanisms, we aim to ensure that employees feel a sense of accomplishment and belonging throughout their careers with us. This is in line with our core concepts of shared benefit and building dreams together, as we work hand in hand towards a sustainable future.

Diversity-friendly: moving towards a future of inclusivity

We understand that our guests come from diverse cultural backgrounds and have diverse needs. We place importance on creating a safe, comfortable, and respectful hospitality environment for every guest. These efforts include Muslim-friendly hospitality services, breastfeeding rooms, and family-friendly recreational areas, as well as accessible ramps, elevators, and guestrooms, while hygiene inspections and fire safety equipment of the highest standards ensure guest safety. In addition, through a comprehensive guest feedback and improvement program, a warm and exceptional hospitality experience is developed.

In 2023, we launched a plant-based diet for carbon reduction and sustainable travel program. Through “green” plant-based dishes, plant-based souvenirs, environmental conservation experiential activities, and sustainable accommodation, we create a unique and sustainable experience for vegetarian, vegan, and environmentally conscious travelers.

Concern for society: achieving a shared vision

We give to others as society has so graciously given to us and encourage our employees to participate in philanthropic activities. With the Taichung City Veterans Service Office, we bring joy during the Lunar New Year to veterans or their dependents who are living alone. We also donate supplies to Huashan Social Welfare Foundation and disadvantaged families in the surrounding Fuan neighborhood, organize the collection of Christmas gifts for children from disadvantaged families, donate sticky rice dumplings to the Fuxing Temple in Xiluo Town of Yunlin County, and participate in clean-up activities at Taichung’s Daan Beach. These efforts stem from a vision for a sustainable life that emphasizes the common good and sharing.

Positive Economics

Green dining: building a sustainable food supply chain

Sustainability is practiced from farm to table. In our nearly 150-square-meter botanical garden grows almost 40 varieties of herbs, including basil, mint, and rosemary, which are ornamental and edible. Our culinary team sources fresh ingredients daily, bringing out the purest and most natural flavors in every dish. We support local agriculture, prioritizing the purchase of fresh seasonal ingredients from Taichung, Changhua and Nantou in central Taiwan. Through a rigorous procurement process and food safety and hygiene management, we provide our guests with healthy, safe, and sustainable dining experiences.

Local partnerships: developing sustainable tourism and economy

In line with the concept of “the more local, the more international” the Howard Prince Hotel Taichung seeks local partnerships from catering to accommodation as part of its commitment to creating a unique and sustainable tourism model.

In conjunction with a plant-based diet for carbon reduction and sustainable travel program launched in 2023, the Green Dining Table program was created. The executive chef of Enrich, a starred restaurant in the Taichung Pure Green Veg Food Guide, was invited to collaborate with the executive chef of Meets to develop creative plant-based dishes, driving sustainable food and beverage trends. Local ingredients and characteristics are incorporated into Chinese and Western vegetarian dishes, vegan Western-style desserts, and vegan souvenirs to promote green consumerism.

This hotel integrates urban exploration with low-carbon travel. For example, we provide discounts at local specialty shops and for green and eco-friendly brands, as well as offer experiences at certified sustainable venues, to encourage sustainable tourism. Every summer, we collaborate with the National Museum of Natural Science, a center for natural science and environmental education in Taichung, to offer family-friendly themed programs that are educational and fun. The aim of ecological tours and nature activities is to elevate understanding of and participation in sustainability issues among people of all ages.

In the future, the Howard Prince Hotel Taichung will continue to deepen local partnerships to promote tourism experiences that integrate local characteristics and sustainability concepts, opening up more possibilities for sustainable tourism.

Local connections: co-creating value

Our sustainability initiatives are based on local culture and industries, as we actively connect with local businesses, brands, and institutions to develop hospitality services that are culturally rich and economically resilient. For example, we have collaborated with the Fuxing Temple in Xiluo Town of Yunlin County, devoted to the worship of the goddess Mazu, and Ruei Chun, a soy sauce producer with a century-old history, to launch a sticky rice dumpling gift box, showcasing traditional religious beliefs, culture, and craftsmanship. We have also partnered with the Yuan Yung Fung brand in Taichung’s Dajia District to develop a pork knuckle and noodle gift set, injecting vitality into Taichung’s traditional noodle industry. Moreover, we have dedicated a space in H Bar for a sustainable lifestyle boutique to promote eco-friendly rice bran soap, O’right products, and ceramic travel mugs, fostering green consumerism awareness and local sustainable business opportunities.

Local Culture

Rooted locally: creating new frontiers for sustainable tourism

The Howard Prince Hotel Taichung is a leading hotel from which guests can explore local culture and experience the city’s vibrant energy. We eschew the conventional cold glass facade to embrace a more refined and humanistic design. From public spaces to guest room furnishings and key cards, artist creations by Liao Hsiu-Ping, the father of modern Taiwanese woodblock printing, are found throughout, in addition to refined and elegant Taiwan red cypress furniture and artisanal touches, which highlight this hotel’s distinctive character.

In recent years, we have actively engaged locally, inviting local artists from different disciplines, such as home decor, painting, and sustainability, to curate art exhibitions that integrate lifestyle aesthetics and sustainability concepts. These exhibitions offer insight into Taiwanese culture and inspire a commitment to sustainable living.

During traditional holidays and festivals, for example the Lantern Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, we sometimes arrange family-friendly DIY activities that combine Taiwanese traditions with environmentally-friendly creativity, such as making handmade lanterns from recycled plastic bottles and red envelopes. People of all ages can experience Taichung’s rich traditional culture through dining, accommodation, and entertaining and interesting experiences.

Diverse forms of communication: enhancing sustainable tourism awareness

To deepen the communication and implementation of sustainability concepts, we continuously optimize the hotel’s communication channels. We lead guests in experiencing the local culture and natural landscapes with a respectful and friendly attitude and encourage low-carbon sustainable tourism practices.

Environmental Responsibility

Green energy optimization: becoming a low-carbon tourism role model

In response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we actively develop green energy-saving strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of our operations. These include replacing chillers, introducing high-efficiency energy-saving equipment, implementing water recycling measures, and installing automated monitoring systems. Since 2022, these concrete actions have been recognized with low-carbon hotel certification by the Taichung City Government, demonstrating the Howard Prince Hotel Taichung’s commitment to sustainable development.

Green procurement: achieving environmental sustainability goals

Based on our green procurement policy, each guest room is stocked with environmentally friendly additive-free shampoo and body wash from Taiwanese brand O’right. In addition to providing our guests with pure and healthy products, we are effectively minimizing our environmental impact and embodying the philosophy of green tourism. In 2024, we reduced our carbon emissions by 61,224 kgs, equivalent to the carbon absorption of 5,566 20-year-old trees, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Real reductions: implementing low-carbon travel and accommodation practices

Adhering to the concepts of plastic use and waste reduction, we do not provide disposable amenities or bottled water in guest rooms. Instead, we use refillable wall-mounted dispensers for shampoo and body wash. On each floor are water dispensers and in each guest room are eco-friendly reusable cold-water bottles. In addition, we have introduced mobile device QR codes in place of printed newspapers, significantly reducing consumption of disposal items and waste. We also continue to promote food waste recycling and other waste sorting to strengthen recycling and reuse of waste and implement green accommodation measures.

Transportation information: encouraging green travel

We provide clear comprehensive public transportation and shuttle service information, in addition to electronic walking tour maps of the surrounding area in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean to assist guests in planning sustainable travel itineraries. We also offer accommodation and public transportation packages from time to time, to encourage guests to choose more environmentally-friendly, low-carbon options for traveling to and from this hotel and exploring Taichung, contributing to a green tourism vision.
